In the next ten years, 75,000 northland baby boomers will leave their jobs for retirement. This will create a dramatic shortage in the work force leaving employers scrambling for qualified employees to fill the vacancies.
According to The McKnight Foundation's report Workforce Development: Overview, "Minnesota faces a shortage of workers. According to the state's Department of Economic Security (now the Department of Employment and Economic Development - DEED), Minnesota will face a shortage or workers in the next three decades. The "baby boomers" - currently the largest share of the workforce - will start retiring in 2015. There is no other demographic group to replace their sheer numbers. In fact, by 2025, the number of retiring-age workers will exceed the number of young, replacement workers (Office of the State Demographer, 2001). State demographers believe that new Americans, refugees, and immigrants will play an important role in filling this gap in the state."
